April 2007 Business Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met Friday, April 13, 2007 in Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church for the April business meeting.  President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order.Judy Gregg led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance in Chaplain Connie Newcomb’s absence. Monica Littlefield did a silent roll call and will record the minutes in the absence of Secretary Marilyn Holt.  There were 21 members present.  Minutes from the previous month’s meeting will be distributed next month. The Treasurer Reports were distributed in the absence of Treasurer Lisa Gideon.  President Phillips asked if there were any corrections or questions.  Being none, President Phillips then said that the Treasurer’s Report would be filed for audit.New Business:  Co-Chair Cathy Chitwood then presented the name of a prospective new member for the club to vote on.  The prospective member is Kristin Ivey, Deanna Landers’ prospect.  The club voted unanimously to invite Kristin to join Pilot Club.  A Letter will be mailed to her immediately.  Cathy Chitwood then motioned that the ballots be destroyed.  The motion was seconded by Joyce Burchfield.  The ballots were destroyed.President Tina Phillips then asked members to submit budget ideas.  Tina also announced the May 4 Special Ed Sports Day @ 8:30 am.  Please go by and cheer the participants on if you can.Reports of Officers: President Tina announced that requests for projects for the new year be turned in as soon as possible.  President Elect Beverley Owens announced that the program meeting for April will be Kris Wright with Celebrate the Children in Commerce.  Beverley also announced that Committee Opportunity sheets are on the tables and need to be signed by each member and selection of the committee they wish to serve on for the new year.   Vice President Pansy Bell had nothing new to report at this time.  PIF Representative Yvonna Womack had nothing new to report to the club.Operations Co-Chair Cathy Chitwood announced that Joyce Burchfield is working on the next newsletter.   Projects Chair Jane Goldsmith asked that members please sign the work sheet for Kids Safe Saturday tomorrow.Reports from Divisions:  Fundraising, Chair Debra Evans thanked everyone for their participation and help with the bike ride.  Debra then passed out roses to all member present.  Our profit as of this date is $8,915.23. President Phillips adjourned the meeting at 1:08 p.m.

April 2007 Program Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met Friday, April 27, 2007 at First United Methodist Church for the April program meeting.  President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order.   There were 26 members and 2 guests present.Chaplain Connie Newcomb led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  There were no new communications.President Tina then asked the members to introduce their guests.  Becky Potts had a guest, Tammy Feagley.Reports of Officers:President Elect Beverley Owens gave a brief report on her trip to District Convention.  She and Vice President Pansy Bell had a great time.  Beverley reported on several awards that our club received; Yearbook participation, Pilot Excellence.Vice President Pansy Bell had nothing new to report.PIF Representative Yvonna Womack was absent.Operations Co Chair Cathy Chitwood had nothing new to report.Projects Chair Jane Goldsmith announced that we still need volunteers for Kid Safe Saturday tomorrow.Fundraising Chair Debra Evans had nothing new to report.    With no further announcements, Beverley Owens introduced Kris Wright with Celebrate the Children, Inc. located in Commerce.  Celebrate the Children concentrates on special needs children (ages 3 to 17) by sending them to a safe and nurturing day camp.  Emphasis is on enhanced self-esteem, personal independence And teamwork skillsRuth Fisher brought the door prize that was won by Janie Crump.The meeting adjourned at 1:05 p.m.

March 2007 Business Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met Friday, March 23, 2007 in Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church for the March business meeting.  President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order.Chaplain Connie Newcomb led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  There were 29 members present and one guest, Kristin Ivey, Deanna Landers’ guest.  Previous month’s meeting was sent out over e-mail and a copy was on each table.   President Phillips stated that the minutes would be filed as presented.   Secretary Holt also read a thank you card from member Renae Thomas. 

Treasurer Lisa Gideon placed the Treasurer’s Report on each table prior to the meeting.  President Phillips asked if there were any corrections or questions.  Being none, President Phillips then said that the Treasurer’s Report would be filed for audit. New Business:   Judy Gregg made a motion for nominations from the floor for the new officers for the coming year.  Judy Laub made a motion that the nominations cease, Cathy Chitwood seconded.  Judy Gregg, Deanna Landers and Barbara Sanders, the 2007/2008 Nominating Committee then presented the slate of Officers for the 2007/2008 year for the club’s approval.  The Officers are:  Beverley Owens – President, Pansy Bell – President-Elect; Debra Evans - Vice President; Sandy Dunston – Secretary; Diane Nickerson – Treasurer; PIF Representative and 1 year Director – Tina Phillips; 2 year Director – Jackie Thornton; and 1 year Director – Diane Morris.   The slate of officers was elected unanimously.  The Nominating Committee also presented a recommendation to the club that we purchase a lap-top computer and software to be used by the club treasurer for record keeping in the coming years.  The motion carried.Reports of Officers:  President Tina then announced that Beverley, Pansy and Debra will be attending the District Convention in April. Vice President Pansy Bell is out putting up signs for the bike ride tomorrow.

Reports of Divisions:  Operations Chair Sandy Dunston then presented the name of a prospective new member for the club to vote on.  The prospective member is Carla Garner, Jane Goldsmith’s prospect.  The club voted unanimously to invite Carla to join Pilot Club.  A letter will be mailed immediately. Judy Gregg then motioned that the ballots be destroyed.  The motion was seconded by Monica Littlefield.  The ballots were destroyed.Projects Chair Jane Goldsmith reminded members about Kids Safe Saturday in April and the Foster Parent’s Auction also in April. Fundraising, Chair Debra Evans asked that everyone please be at the Civic Center grounds early tomorrow for the bike ride.Becky Potts furnished the door prize that was won by Tina Phillips.President Phillips adjourned the meeting at 12:55 p.m.

March 2007 Program Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met Friday, March 9, 2007 at First United Methodist Church for the April program meeting.  President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order.   There were 21 members and 1 guest present.Sherry Moore led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance in the absence of Chaplain Connie Newcomb. Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  There were no new communications. President Tina then asked the members to introduce their guests.  Jane Goldsmith introduced her guest Carla Garner. Reports of Officers: President Tina announced to the club about our Pilot Mission for Matt – Pilot Club member Jane Goldsmith’s son who will be serving in Iraq.  We will try to send Matt goodies once a month.  Tina will personally pay the postage.  Also, Tina has received an e-mail from Glenda Clements asking that our club consider being a North Fall Council co-Sponsor. President Elect Beverley Owens had nothing new to report. Vice President Pansy Bell had nothing new to report. PIF Representative Yvonna Womack reported that we had received recognition for Goals and Grants and Pacesetters.  Reports of Divisions:  Operations Chair Sandy Dunston announced that we need to take food to Renae Thomas, who had surgery this week.  Projects Chair Jane Goldsmith had nothing new to report. Fundraising Chair Debra Evans then took over the meeting as the program for today is preparing for the bike ride.  The meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.

February 2007 Program Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met Friday, February 23, 2006 at First United Methodist Church for the February program meeting.  President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order. Renae Thomas led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  There were 25 members and three guests present for our thank you luncheon.  Our guests were Kristen Ivey, Deanna Landers’ guest and Carla Garner, Jane Goldsmith’s guest.  Our third guest was our guest speaker Susan Lennon.Fundraising Chair Debra Evans announced that not enough members are showing up for the work sessions.  We need more goody bag items.  We also need the tee shirt ads and money turned in now.  Debra also said that she needs more SAG wagon drivers.Projects Chair Jane Goldsmith announced that the projects committee has decided to purchase two new shaken baby dolls.Operations Chair Sandy Dunston had nothing new to report.Vice President Beverley Owens introduced Susan Lennon with the Make-A- Wish Foundation.  Susan gave a very informative talk about all the wishes granted and the process for getting them granted.  There were 68 wishes granted in 2006 in our North East Texas area.Announcements:

President Tina announced that the club will elect officers for the new year at the business meeting scheduled for March 23.The meeting adjourned at 1 p.m.

February 2007 Business Meeting

Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  There were 22 members present, and one guest, Lynn Ward, our Care Giver of the Year award winner.  Minutes from the previous month’s meeting were sent out over e-mail and a copy was on each table.   President Phillips stated that the minutes would be filed as presented.   Treasurer Lisa Gideon placed the Treasurer’s Report on each table prior to the meeting.  President Phillips asked if there were any corrections or questions.  Being none, President Phillips then said that the Treasurer’s Report would be filed for audit.Reports of Officers:  President Elect Beverley Owens announced that the program meeting for February will be Susan Lennon with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.Vice President Pansy Bell had nothing new to report at this time.  PIF Representative Yvonna Womack was absent.Reports from Divisions:  Fundraising, Chair Debra Evans reported that there will be a work session Saturday, February 10, in Lisa Gideon’s garage to work on the signs for the bike ride.  Also, we need to get the tee shirt ads sold and the money turned in to Renae Thomas.   Please be collecting items for the goody bags.  A work session to stuff the goody bags is scheduled for March 20 at Kathy Lennon’s office at 4:30 p.m.  Operations Chair Sandy Dunston had nothing new to report.    Projects Chair Jane Goldsmith reported that the Projects Committee will meet Wednesday, February 21 the the admin building to discuss how to use the funds that were budgeted for the Frosty Carnival that has been cancelled.  Barbara Sanders had mailed the package to Aaron Welch, the serviceman we are treating this month.  The next project will be the basket for the Foster Parent’s Auction coming up in March.President Phillips adjourned the meeting at 12:50 p.m.

January 2007 Program Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met Friday, January 26, 2007 at First United Methodist Church for the January program meeting.  President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order. Chaplain Connie Newcomb led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  There were no new cmmunications.President Tina then asked the members to introduce their guests.  Cathy Chitwood had a guest, Sherry Hawley, who is a member of the Pilot Club of Quitman.There were no Officers with reports today.President Tina then opened the floor for any updates or announcements by committee chairs.   Debra Evans reported that her fundraising committee has a sign painting meeting scheduled for Saturday, February 3 at Lisa Gideon’s garage.  Please try and be there.

Jane Goldsmith announced that the Projects committee will be meeting at the admin building on Monday, January 29 to select the Caregiver of the year award.   

With no further announcements, Sherry Moore introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Stypko; Dr Stypko is the doctor working the new Wound Care Clinic at the hospital.  He also had his assistant, Chanda Fulguim.  He gave a very informative and graphic presentation on the wound care clinic and the good it has already accomplished for patients with wounds that will not heal properly.The meeting adjourned at 1 p.m.

January 2007 Business Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met Friday, January 12, 2006 in Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church for the January business meeting.  President Tna Phillips called the meeting to order.Chaplain Connie Newcomb led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  There were 24 members present, and one guest, Jewel Reed, Helen McDaniel’s guest.  Minutes from the previous month’s meeting were sent out over e-mail and a copy was on each table.   President Phillips stated that the minutes would be filed as presented.   Secretary Holt also read a Christmas card from the NE Texas Child Advocacy Center.  Treasurer Lisa Gideon placed the Treasurer’s Report on each table prior to the meeting.  President Phillips asked if there were any corrections or questions.  Being none, President Phillips then said that the Treasurer’s Report would be filed for audit. Reports of Officers:  President Elect Beverley Owens announced that the program meeting for January will be Dr. Stypko from the wound care clinic at the hospital. Vice President Pansy Bell had nothing new to report at this time.  PIF Representative Yvonna Womack announced that it is time for the PIF Pacesetters Contribution and the PI Grants and Goals Contribution.Reports from Divisions:  Fundraising, Chair Debra Evans reported that the Fundraising committee would be meeting January 22 at Pizza Inn to work on more plans for the bike ride.  A work day is planned to Saturday, 2/03/07 in Lisa Gideon’s garage to work on signs for the bike ride.  Also, we need to get the tee shirt ads sold ASAP.   Turn in the money to Renae Thomas.  Tom Dolan has volunteered to donate the beef for the stew and Johnny Lennon will once again donate the chickens for the chicken stew.  Tom Dolan has also volunteered to just help with anything we need done.    Dairy Max is donating chocolate milk, cheese and yogurt.  Please be collecting items for the goody bags.  We need to make 400 goody bags.  Making sure we order plenty of XL tee shirts.  Stuffing goody bags March 20 at Kathy Lennon’s office at 4:30 p.m.  Sign up sheets will be out at the next meeting.Operations Chair Sandy Dunston had nothing new to report.   Projects Chair Jane Goldsmith reported to the club that the Frosty Carnival has been cancelled.  We need more time to organize for such a large project.   We have received three letters nominating citizens in the county for Caregiver of the Year Award.    Copies of the latest SS Pilot Club newsletter are on the tables.If any member wants to go to the Chamber Banquet and sit at the Pilot table, please get with Lisa Gideon to get your ticket for dinner.  Tickets are $20.President Phillips adjourned the meeting at 12:50 p.m.

December Christmas Party

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met on December 4, 2006 in the home of Wanda Galyean for their annual Christmas party. Members and guest arrived between 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. and brought food and wore their favorite holiday sweater, outfit and/or accessory.  After everyone arrived,  Jana Williams gave the group instructions on our traditional holiday party game/ice breaker -  this year it was Christmas Bingo and the prize for winning was a wrapping paper organizer.  After the game,  the blessing was given by Connie Newcomb, and everyone enjoyed hot and cold appetizers, desserts,  hot chocolate and apple cider.   After the meal,  the official rules of the gift exchange were explained by Cathy Chitwood and Beverly Owens,  who also monitored the activities to assure a successful exchange.  Project announcements were made about the upcoming Frosty Winter Carnival and a list was passed around for members to pick which booth they wanted to develop for the Carnival, scheduled to be held at the Sulphur Springs Middle School Gym on January 27, 2006.  Members were also reminded of the last December project, to serve the Christmas meal at Our Place on Monday,  December 18, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. Pilots wanted to help so that the participants of the facility and their families could spend the time at the party together.  Door prizes were given throughout the evening and party favors were distributed as club members left the party.  A fun time of fellowship and good cheer was had by all.  Special thanks were given to Wanda Galyean for allowing the club to meet at her beautifully decorated home.    

November Business Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met on October 27, 2006 at noon at the First United Methodist Fellowship Hall for their regular business meeting.  President Elect Beverly Owens called the meeting to order. Connie Newcomb led the invocation and pledge.  Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call and read a thank you note from ECLC regarding their donation from Pilot to their special education classroom.  They are going to purchase some software for their kids with the money received.  Resignation letter was read from Rita Stolenberg which was regretfully accepted by the Board of Directors during their executive meeting earlier in the week.   Treasurer Lisa Gideon passed around financial reports to be reviewed by the club.   No new business was on the agenda. Officers reports were given; Vice-President Pansy Bell asked anyone that hasn't already gotten their yearbook to please let her know, especially new members. Fundraising committee chairman, Debra Evans,  reported that her committee has secured some campaign signs to reuse for the bike tour.  Operations committee chairman, Sandy Dunston,  reminded everyone of the Christamas party scheduled for December 4th.  Inviations will be mailed next week giving details about time and food to be brought by the different committees. Projects committee member Judy Gregg reported on the Winter Carnival scheduled for January 27th to be held at the High School Cafeteria. She encouraged everyone to pick a booth and work in groups for each game.  We will invite all the special education kids in the county to attend the event beginning at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with lunch being served. Jackie Thornton reported that the Alzheimer's walk was a success raising over $7,000,  with the mini walk contributing over $2,300 of that amount.  Chairman Jane Goldsmith was delivering the money to the Alzheimer Alliance today.  The money will be used by the alliance toward continued research for the disease and some of the money will come back to the community to support the Terrific Tuesday Day Care program.  Kathy Lennon reported that the Circle of Friends breakfast was received very well and many blessing were given and received by members that participated in serving those handicapped campers that early morning breakfast.  Diane Morris reminded the club that we have another opportunity to serve at the Our Place Christmas party on December 18th.  Pilot members that want to sign up will help serve dinner to the participants so that they families can enjoy the party together.  Judy Gregg conducted a drawing for the members that participated in the Halloween safety puzzle and a prize was given.  No door prize was brought for the meeting. Beverly Owens brought the new portable sound systems that was purchased to everyone's attention.  It will come in handy at our different events.  The meeting was adjourned.

October 2006 Program Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met on October 27, 2006 at noon at the First United Methodist Fellowship Hall for their regular monthly Program meeting. Tables were decorated with a timely theme of pumpkins,fall leaves, Halloween pencils/pens and small jack-o-lanterns filled with candy.  Decoration will be donated after the meeting to the Boys and Girls Club for their craft activities.   President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order, thanked Cathy Chitwood for the meeting's decor and then recognized the SSHS marching band for their accomplishments at the Louisiana competition last Saturday. The Proud Blue band came home with the Grand Champion designation of the competition.  UIL Marching Competition results were also pending as of the noon meeting.   Judy Gregg gave the invocation and pledge in the absence of Chaplain Connie Newcomb.  Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call and read club correspondence.  Several guest were recognized including our speaker Betty Reese, past Governor of Pilot International Texas District. There were no reports from officers at this time.  Fundraising Chairman Debra Evans reported that she had a successful meeting with her committee on the Bike Tour.  She will be sending around a sign up sheet for club members to choose which area of the Tour that they would like to be involved in.  Operations Chairman Sandy Dunston announced that our Pilot Christmas Party will be held December 4th at Wanda Galyean's house at 5:30 p.m. Invitations will be mailed in November as another reminder.  Projects Chairman Jane Goldsmith announced that the Brainminder Buddies puppets shows finished up with Travis Elementary earlier that morning.  She reminded everyone of the times to be worked in the concession stand at Terror Trails on Friday, 10/27 and Saturday, 10/28, to help the Food Bank out.  The Circle of Friends breakfast is coming up next weekend, November 4th - more information about food prep will be distributed via email next week.  The Alzheimer's Walk will also be coming up soon, November 9th and everyone was encouraged to attend.   President Elect Beverly Owens introduced Betty as the founder of the League of Dreams in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.  Mrs. Reese explained how the League of Dreams,  a baseball league for school aged children with disabilities, got started by the Pilot Club of Mt. Pleasant several years ago.  Because this is a unique league,  children from all over the area from Paris to Sulphur Springs to Deport travel to Mt. Pleasant to play baseball once a week for 8 weeks in April and May of each year.  She explained the impact that the league has had on the kids involved,   by providing them an environment specifically designed for them and their disabilities to enjoy one of America's favorite past times.  Not only do the kids benefit from the activity but so do the parents of these special children as they see their child get an opportunity to do things that they wouldn't otherwise get to enjoy. The volunteers or buddies that assist the kids during the games are also touched by what this means to the kids participating.  Betty encouraged the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs to be creative in our thinking about implementing a local activity/project of this nature for our kids.  Activities such as dance classes for girls or martial arts and camp outs for boys.  After Betty entertained a few questions from the audience President Phillips mentioned the club's 1st annual Fall Carnival that the Projects committee will be planning to benefit our local kids with disabilities to include games and activities designed to cater to their needs.  The door prize was won by Brenda Monroe and the meeting was adjourned.

 

October 2006 Business Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met on October 13, 2006  for their October business meeting at 12 noon at the First United Methodist Church.  Pilot members enjoyed a lunch meal of chicken pot pie with biscuits,  fresh garden salad, rolls and a fruit cup for dessert. President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order.  Chaplain Connie Newcomb gave the invocation and pledge.  After the meal prayer,  there was a Pilot Surprise for everyone....United Way Campaign Chairman Bob Weaver arrived dressed in full baseball gear to thank the Pilot Club members for this year's donation from Pilot,  which was the largest donation of any other service club in town,  and to also thank the members for their donation of time for serving as workers, again the largest number of volunteers from any other service club,  for the campaign and distributing packets and collecting money for United Way.   Mr. Weaver then introduced Mayor Freddie Taylor who thanked the club for their work and read a Proclamation from the City of Sulphur Springs to honor the Pilot Club for their service to the community.  As an additional surprise,  yellow carnations were distributed to each Pilot member as a personal thank you from Bob and Peggy Weaver.   While Bob continued to pass around flowers,  a silent roll call was done by Marilyn Holt.  Minutes had been distributed via email to all members and were filed as distributed.  The Treasurer's report was also distributed and with no questions were also filed for audit.   New Business: Operations co-chairman Cathy Chitwood was next on the agenda to present two new potential members to be voted on by the club,  after a unanimous yes vote,  Janie Chapman and Audrey Latimer will be asked to join the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs.  There was no old business to discuss.  Reports from Officers:  President-Elect Beverly Owens announced that our program meeting for October will be former Pilot Governor Betty Reese from Mt. Pleasant will be here to share with us about the Pilot Club of Mt. Pleasant's League of Dreams program which is a baseball program for children with brain related injuries or disorders.   Fundraising Chairman Debra Evans report that they would be having a meeting soon at the Administration building to redo some signs for the bike tour coming up in March, 2007.  Operations Co-Chairman Cathy Chitwood reminded her committee of their meeting to be held next Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at the Presbyterian Church to discuss the Christmas party to be held at Wanda Galyean's home.  Projects Chairman Janie Goldsmith reported on the many projects that are going on in October and November.  She also gave the club a impromptu lesson on how the voices for our puppet shows should sound and what to do as a puppeteer. She remined everyone that there were lots of project opportunities  to get involved with over the coming months. Dates to be remembered are:  Halloween Safety Brainminder Puppet shows at the ECLC campus at 9:30a.m. and 10:15 a.m. on October 17th, Austin Elementary at 9:00 a.m. on October 24th(volunteers still needed), Travis Elementary campus at 9:00 a.m. on October 27th(volunteers still needed).  Terror Trails concession stand work nights on October 27th and 28th for the benefit of the North East Texas Food Bank(all proceeds go to the Food Bank),  United Way packet distribution throughout October,2006,   Circle of Friends breakfast to be served on November 4th,  Alzheimer's Walk at Coleman Park on November 9th, the Handicapable Rodeo at Civic Center from 9 - 2 p.m. on November 17th and serve food at the Our Place Christmas party at 6:30 p.m. on December 18, 2006.  Other announcements included reminders about Pilot District workshop in Nachogdoches on October 21st - 4 members signed up to attend and the Pilot Club of Quitman Extravaganza fundraiser to be held at 11 a.m. on November 18, 2006.  Door prize was won by Tina Phillips. Meeting was adjorned.

September 2006 Program Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met on Friday, September 22, 2006 at noon at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall for their September  Program meeting.  A hearty lunch was  served by Judy's Kitchen of meatloaf, cream potatoes and salad.  An apple crisp with whipped cream was served for dessert.  Tables were brightly decorated with small stew pots filled with candy and tied with a Congratulations balloon to celebrate the Pilot Club stew cookoff team and their accomplishment of winning the 1st place Beef Stew contest held  last weekend at the  Hopkins County Stew Contest.  Our winning cook team,  Judy Gregg,  Jana Williams, and Joyce Burchfield's picture was proudly displayed in copies of the Millenium Shopper,  which were provided for each club member by Joy Wilson.   A few minutes were taken to congratulate these ladies and for them to share some stories about the stew day.  Proceeds from the winning pot were going to be allocated to purchase tables to be used at the multiple club projects all year around.   The program meeting was called to order by President Tina Phillips.  Connie Newcomb gave the invocation and pledge.  A silent roll call was done by Secretary Marilyn Holtlyn.  There was no correspondence requiring action at this time.  Tina welcomed our guests for the day which were: Janie Chapman from Alliance Bank, guest of Deanna Landers,  Audra Latimer,  guest of Judy Laub, and Ellen Russell from Hopkins County Memorial Hospital,  a guest of Renee Thomas.  There were no reports from officers at this time.  Sandy Dunston,  Operations Chairman,  reminded everyone, especially our newest members,  of our New Member Orientation luncheon scheduled next week on September 27, 2006 at the Presbyterian Church. This orientation will get the newest Pilots up to speed about the history of Pilot Club and all things Pilot.  Jane Goldsmith, Projects Chairman,   passed around sign up sheets for the Alzheimer Walk with helpers needed for Logistics and Hospitality committees and a sign up sheet for the Pilot Brainminder Buddies Halloween Puppet shows to be conducted in injunction with the local EMS and their Andy the Ambulance to remind kids to be safe during the Halloween holiday coming up.   The annual Pilot Club Sweetheart was presented by Sandy Dunston and our 2006-2007 receipient was Judy Gregg.  Judy was honored in this way for exemplifying what it means to be a Pilot Club member, for her many contributions to the community as a Pilot, and going above and beyond what is expected to help others when a need arises.  Judy is a 20 year charter member of the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs.  After the sweetheart presentation,  Tina introduced the program speaker to be Joanna Horton from the Pilot Club of Winnsboro. Mrs. Horton is a  past Texas Pilot Governor and past Pilot International Texas District Governor.  She spoke to the club about Texas Pilot Traumatic Brain Injury (TIB) Camp Inc.,  a newly formed Texas Foundation for the many Texas TIB camps that are sponsored throughout the year by Pilot Clubs around the state.  The camps and retreats for 2006-2007 are as follows:  Circle of Friends - at Camp Shiloh, Lake Bob Sandlin, Tx on November 3-5, 2006, Higher Ground at Camp for All, Burton, Tx on May 3-6, 2007, Panhandle Playday - Ceta Canyon between Canyon and Happy, Tx on May 19, 2007, and Mountain High - Alpine Resort and Black Bear Lodge, Red River New Mexico on August 26-30,2007. The camps and retreats are for individuals of all ages who are survivors of a tramatic brain injury and are a place for them to have fun and be surrounded by people who truly care about them.  The camps are often a time for families to attend and enjoy their loved one having a great time.  Joanne shared with us information about the annual golf tournament to help raise money for the various camps.  The Fourth Annual Team Up and Tee Off for TBI Camps is scheduled for Friday, March 30, 2007 at the ColoVista Country Club in Bastrop, Texas. Sponsorship levels are available in all ranges.  For more information on sponsporships or to play call Joanna Horton at 903-342-5555.  Joanne closed her program by giving everyone a used golf ball and ask that we put them in a place were we could be reminded of these special survivors of traumatic brain injuries - that they may not be as perfect now as when they came into the world,  like the used golf ball they now have a few scars and dimples left from the injuries that they have survived,  but that they are still very useful people with lots of life and play left in them.  A reminder of our Pilot Club focus.   Following the program,  announcements were made about upcoming project and meeting dates.  President Tina mentioned that the honor wall was a wonderful success at the Fall Festival.  The wall featured many of own military servicemen and women that are serving our country from Hopkins County.  The wall will be on display at various community businesses in the coming months after a few more pictures are added.  Tina Phillips and her coworkers at Bawcum and Preuss CPA's were instrumental in building the wall for display.  The club is very proud of Tina's efforts with this service project to honor our military service personnel.    The meeting was adjourned.

September 2006 - Pilot Official Visit

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met on Friday, September 8, 2006 at noon at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall for their September  Business meeting.  A lunch menu of Chicken Fried Chicken, salad, rice and carrot cake was served by Judy's Kitchen.  This meeting was the Pilot Club's official visit with 2nd Lieutenant Governor of Texas,  Susan Riedesel as the official visitor representing Pilot International.  The meeting was called to order by President Tina Phillips.   Connie Newcomb lifted up several special people in prayer and provided the invocation and pledge. Marilyn Holt did an official roll call. Treasurer reports were distributed by Lisa Gideon.  New Business conducted was regarding a new project for the club - Military Honor Roll Project.  The club approved a redistribution of funds from our miscellaneous project funds in the amount of $150 toward this project to honor our service men and women from our county.  Pictures, names and family information will be on display in the foyer of the Civic Center during the Fall Festival activities.  The display will then be carried to local banks and merchant in Sulphur Springs to continue to honor those that are serving our country.  Old Business:  A tabled motion from a prior meeting was discussed and voted on regarding where to place reserve funds to earn interest before projects were completed.  Officer reports were given: President Elect Beverly Owens mentioned that Joanna Horton will be coming for our Program meeting on September 22, 2006 to talk about the Circle of Friends camp that we sponsor each year.  Vice President Pansy Bell distributed the new yearbooks and mentioned that the picture album of members would be distributed as soon as all pictures were taken.  PIF Representative Yvonne Womack reported that she has recently gotten enough used cartridges to send to PIF for this ongoing Pilot International project.  She will accept more at any time throughout the year.   Fundraising chairman Debra Evans announced that she had contacted the Texas Department of Transportation regarding the ongoing construction on Hwy 19 - it is likely that the project will not be complete by the time our Bike Tour project is scheduled March, 2007 so we will be using the same route as in March, 2006.  She will be scheduling a work night to make signs soon for those willing to help with that since some of the signs were stolen off the route during the last tour.  Operations chairman Sandy Dunston reminded the membership that the new member luncheon is scheduled for September 27, 2006 and will need an RSVP for food arrangements.  Project chairman Jane Goldsmith reviewed the projects that have been going on this past month with over $1,400 being distributed to Meal-a-Day, Terrific Tuesday, Alzheimer's Support Group, Handicappable Rodeo, Our Place and the military projects.  Goldmith also announced that there are many projects coming up that the membership will be able to get some hands-on participation with and those include making fleece blankets for the Shaken Baby project,  sign up to work the Halloween Safety Puppet shows in Oct for the elementary schools, applications from special education teachers in the county for needs in their classrooms, help with signage and registration at the Alzheimer's Walk in November and the Handicapple Carnival - date to be announced. She encouraged all to get involved.  With no more Pilot Business to be discussed,  President Phillips announced our guest speaker,  Lt. Governor Susan Riedesel.  Lt. Riedesel commended the club on the multitude of worthy Pilot projects that are conducted in our community.  She also thanked the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs for the support that it gives both the Pilot Texas District projects and the Pilot International projects each and every year.  Pilot Club is an organization of friends and colleagues that give back to their community through service to others.  President Phillips thanked Lt. Riedesal for coming and gave her a set of the Historical Hopkins County Thank You Cards as a token of our appreciation of her visit and service to Pilot International.  Door prize was drawn and the winner was Wanda Galyean.  After questions and announcements the meeting was adjourned.

August 2006 Program Meeting

The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs met on Friday, August 25, 2006 at noon at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall for their August Program meeting.  A lunch menu of spaghetti and italian meat sauce, salad, french bread and pineapple cake was served by Rhonda at Judy's Kitchen.  Over 40 members and guests were present at the meeting.  President Tina Phillips called the meeting to order and various Pilot members introduced their guests: Sherry Moore brought Chanda Fulkum with the Wound Care Center,  Renae Thomas brought Ellen Russell, Jackie Thornton brought Candy White, Judy Laub invited Audra Latimer and guest speakers were Sherry Garrard and Denis McCarty from the Northeast Texas Food Bank.  Joyce Burchfield provided our table decorations of school supplies and requested that they be gathered up at the conclusion of our meeting and donated to the teachers in our school systems to have available to give out to students in need of them this year.  Connie Newcomb provided the innvocation and pledge. Marilyn Holt did an official roll call in prepartion of our Pilot Official Visit scheduled for September 8, 2006.  Announcements from committees included: Fundraising chair Debra Evans reminded everyone of the historical Thank You note cards were still available for sale,  Operations chair Sandy Dunston announced that a new member orientation luncheon would be held on September 27, 2006 at noon at the Presbyterian church to get new members up to speed about all things Pilot.  Additional information will be sent to those members with other Pilots invited as well.  Pilot Sweetheart ballots were placed on the table with criteria listed and members were encouraged to vote and return ballots to Sandy for presentation of sweetheart at the September program meeting.  Project chair Jane Goldsmith thanked Deanna Landers for her special help in making the Our Place project happen and those Pilots that attended the Our Place flooring project presentation on Monday, August 21 at their facility on Gilmer St.  The Our Place director, parents and participants were thrilled with the new floor that was installed with the help of Pilot club donations, some participants were anxious to try it out with a little dancing. Goldsmith also mentioned that members were welcome to join her next Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at the Senior Citizens Center at 11:30 a.m. at which time we'd be presenting a donation to the Meal-A-Day service.  Members can also provide some hands on help by making a few baby blankets to give to WIC for the ongoing project to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome in our community.  Materials for that can be picked up at Tina Phillips office on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at noon. With no further announcements, our program speaker,  Sherry Garrard, board of director for our local food bank,  was introduced and gave the club an update on the current number of agencies served, families served and meals provided as a result of the food bank being in existence.  She explained that a number of changes were being imposed on the local food bank facility from the agency in which they are required to affiliate with to provide such a food services to our local community.  The current director, Denise McCarty and the board of directors will need to begin raising money in our community to help meet ,  not only the daily operational needs of the facility but for upgrades to the facility that are being required, which will help expand the number of agencies and people served by the food bank.  Garrard said that they will be speaking to other community groups about the changes to increase their visibility in the community and to ultimately increase financial support to the facility to meet the new requirements.  After a brief question and answer session the program was concluded and the meeting was adjourned.   The Pilot Club's  service focus is helping persons with brain-related disorders and disabilites through education, volunteerism, and financial support.  To learn more about the Pilot Club contact Tina Phillips, President 2006-2007 at 903-885-7571.      

August 2006 Business Meeting  

On Friday, August 11, 2006 the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs held their August Business meeting at noon at the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center.  A lunch meal of homemade meat loaf, corn, twice baked mashed pototoes and salad was serve with apple crisp for dessert.  The meeting was called to order by President Tina Phillips.  Prayer concerns, invocation and pledge were offered up by Chaplain Connie Newcomb. Special prayers were lifted up to fellow Pilot members Norma McIllwain and Jane Goldsmith and their families at this time. Secretary Marilyn Holt read correspondence and did an official roll call to prepare the club for our official visit coming up in September.  Minutes and financial statements were distributed and filed for audit.  President Elect Beverly Owens announced that at our Program meeting on August 25, 2006 that Sherry Garrard would be speaking to us about the Food Bank.   Vice-President Pansy Bell mentioned that she is still working on the yearbook and encouraged members to submit information changes as soon as possible.  No report from PIF according to PIF Representative Yvonna Womack.   New Business discussed was the 2005-2006 annual PEP Report which outlines to Pilot International the club's membership changes and club operation activities, fundraising and projects accomplished by the club.  A score of 727 was obtained for the year, when a score of 400 is adequate to earn international service club recognition. Discussion was tabled about club funds until further information was received from international.  No report was presented from the  fundraising committee. Operations has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, August 15 to plan a new member orientation gathering.  With several new members,  the club wanted to help jump start them about all things Pilot.  The projects committee has been busy delivering checks and care packages to several organizations in the community,   the Alzheimer Support Group received a financial donation and the S&E Veterans Establishment received resident packages and housing good that were needed.   It is also time again to prepare more baby blankets and shaken baby pamphlets to WIC.  Judy Gregg announced that a stew site has been secure #65A for the annual Hopkins County Stew contest to be held on September 16, 2006. The Pilot site will be east of the creek closest to the foot bridge near the civic center building.  All members were welcome to come to the site.  Judy Gregg, Jana Williams and Joyce Burchfield will be cooking beef stew for the event. Judy has decorations for site and Pilot signage will be displayed as the sponsor.  Lisa Gideon ask for volunteers to help in the judges tent during the stew contest.  Barbara Sanders will be preparing care packages for our military personnel and everyone was encouraged to submit names of family or friends in the services that the packages could be sent to. Barbara also annoucned that the Handicapable Rodeo is scheduled for November 17, 2006 from 9-1 p.m. for us to mark our calenderts and that there would be plenty of opportunities for hands on help with the kids or to serve the lunch meal.  No old business was on the agenda.  An announcements about the Texas District Fall Workshop was made.  The workshop will be held in October in Nachodoches, Texas and members were invited to attend.  With no other announcements or business the meeting was adjorned.   The Pilot Club organization's service focus is helping persons with brain-related disorders and disabilites through education, volunteerism, and financial support. To learn more about the Pilot Club contact Tina Phillips, President 2006-2007 at 903-885-7571.    

July 2006 Program Meeting

On Friday, July 28, 2006 the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs held their July Program meeting at noon at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.  Tables were brightly decorated in a beach theme with beach balls and snow cones and candies displayed on the tables.  A lunch meal of chef salad with all the trimmings was served with pinapple cake for dessert by Judy Gilreath. President Tina Phillps called the meeting to order and ask for any Chaplain request to be given to Connie Newcomb.  Connie announced prayer requests and then gave the invocation and pledge for the group. Tina opened the floor to commitee chairman to update the club on activities.  Jane Goldsmith invited the club to join her in delivering the items donated by club members to the S & E Veterans Establishment that afternoon at 5 p.m.  S&E is a facilities for veterans to live either temporarily or long term when they have no family or other place to live.  Jane announced that if members had any other donations for S&E throughout the year to bring to the meetings and she would make sure to take them to the facility. With no other business or announcements before the club,  Monica Littlefield introduced the speaker for the meeting to be Pat Higginbotham from the Terrific Tuesday program. Pat thanked the club for the financial support that Pilot has given Terrific Tuesday program the last two years.  Terrific Tuesday is a weekly 4 hour program for Alzeheimer's patients to attend which gives their caregivers a break in their routine. Pat gave a heart felt testimonial of what the program means to her family,  her husband Joe attends Terrific Tuesday each week.  With an average of 7-8 participants in the program each week it is growing and allowing more people suffering from Alzheimer's disease to gather together and be accepted as they are,  to enjoy activities and field trips to stimilulate their minds.  After a questions and answer session with the club, a check for $150 was presented to Pat from Pilot to continue its good work in the community.  For more information about Terrific Tuesday you can contact Joyce McDonald,  program director at 903-243-5620.  President Phillips concluded the meeting with a door prize drawing that was won by Deanna Landers. July 2006 Business Meeting

On Friday, July 14, 2006 the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs held their July Business meeting at noon at the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center.  A lunch meal of stuffed tomatoes with tuna salad,  green bean casserole and banana pudding was served to the club before its first meeting of the club's new year.  Newly elected President Tina Phillips gave some brief instructions about the flow of the meeting and words of encouragment about getting involved by participating prior to calling the meeting to order.  The meeting was then called to order and the invocation and pledge was led by Barbara Sanders.  Secretary Marilyn Holt did a silent roll call.  Minutes will be distributed next meeting and there was no communication to present to the club. The Treasurer's report for May,2006 was distributed by Treasurer Lisa Gideon and filed for audit. President Elect Beverly Owens announced that our program for July 28, 2006 meeting would be Joyce McDonald from Terrific Tuesday.  President Phillips also mentioned that programs had already been set up for several months already.  Vice-President Pansy Bell announced that there would be a new twist to the yearbook,  with individual pictures of club members included.  She asked that if she hadn't already taken your picture when you arrived to be sure and let her get it before leaving the meeting today.  PIF Representatiave, Past President Yvonna Womack did not have any news from Pilot International to share.  For New Business the Division Budgets were presented for Fundraising, Operations, and Projects.  Fundraising's projected net income for the year is expected to be $7,130 from the annual Pilot Club Spring Fever Bike Tour.   The Operations Committee is budgeting $2,700 to recruit and train new members,  website expenses, and member relations.  The Project Committe had many new and repeat project which they have budgeted $10,000 for including continued support of the Alzheimer's Terrific Tuesday program, Alzeheimer Support Group, and Alzheimer's Annual Walk,  Hospice, Foster Parents Association, Brainminder Buddies Halloween safety program in the elementary schools and brain safety program at Kid's Safe Saturday, Caregiver of the Year Award, Circle of Friends Camp, Chrysalis House, Graduation Celebration, Handicapable Rodeo, Hopkins County Stew contest, Meal-A-Day, Our Place, Military Support, Special Olympics, Special Education classrooms, United Way, Shaken Baby prevention project.  With several new projects to be implement this year with more details about Super Saturday and S&E Veterans Establishment to be presented in the coming months. After questions were answered - all division budgets were approved as well as the new Club Budget for the 2006-2007 club year.   Reports from Divsions were given with Fundraising coordinator Debra Evans reporting no activity this month,  the Operations division coordinator Sandy Dunston passed out committee assignments for meetings, newsletter, cards, scrapbook, club news, email and food coordinators.   The Projects division coordinator Jane Goldsmith explained the committees plans for Super Saturday as a fun day sponsored by Pilot for children with disabilities in our local community similar to the League of Dreams in Mt. Pleasant.  Goldsmith also mentioned the care packages for temporary/permanent residence in the S&E Veterans Establishment.  Wanda Galyean gave us an update on our room that we are sponsoring at the Chrysalis House.  All elecicity for our room has been rewired and is operational, sheet rock will be put in in the next few weeks and that we'd be ready to paint hopefully in August.  A set of bunk beads and a trundle bead will be needed to furnish it, so members were encouraged to be on the look out for these items to donate or purchase.  Deanna Landers mentioned the Our Place project that she's been working on to get new flooring for them.  Judy Gregg took a minute to thank club members for their donation of prom dresses and accessories.  They were all used by young girls that may not have gotten to experience a prom without our help. She will accept and store any others until next prom season.  With no old business to discuss,  President Phillips adjourned the meeting.  

Pilot Club Installation 2006-2007- June 2006

On Thursday, June 29, 2006, the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs held its annual Installation of Officers ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and the First Baptist Church Activity Center.  A variety of salads and fruits were served to members and guests with cheese cake for dessert,  prepared by members of the Operations Committee. The room and tables were decorated in bright spring colors and a "Busy Bee" theme.   President Yvonne Womack welcomed the assembly and recognized guests from the visiting Pilot Clubs from Winnsboro, Mineola and Quitman.  Marilyn Holt presented perfect attendance awards and Deanna Landers presented a very special scholarship.  A $500 Marie Newton-Sepia Memorial Scholarship awarded by the Pilot International Foundation was presented to Dusti Evans James.  Dusti is a student at Texas A&M University at Commerce finishing her Masters Degree in Education.  Dusti is taking her final courses n the summer semesters and is scheduled to graduate in August, 2006. Dusti is currently employed by the Sulphur Springs Independant School district and is already working in the area of Speical Education.  After President Womack recognized outgoing appointees, committee chariman, and officers with gifts of appreciation,  President Womack gave her last address as President to the Club.  Pilot member Judy Gregg did a very "professional" job (with a hint of humor) while installing the new officers for the 2006-2007 Pilot club year.  Newly elected officers are:  President - Tina Phillips,  President-Elect - Beverly Owens, Vice President - Pansy Bell, Secretary - Marilyn Holt, and Tresurer - Lisa Gideon.  Once the gravel was passed, the incoming President Tina Phillips reflected on past accomplishments of the club with their membership recruitment, fundraising efforts and project accomplishments. She then gave an inspiring and uplifting challenage to the club to continue its good works in the community and to look forward to some new and worthy projects slated for the new year.   After the traditional Pilot Club Code of Ethics were read,  silent auction item winners were announced, door prize winners were drawn and the meeting was
